Why the great white shark is not kept in aquariums
In the huge glass vessels exhibited in different parts of the world to the delight of the public, you can see a wide variety of marine creatures: a killer whale, a zebra shark or a hammer … But why are there no white sharks ..?
It is the largest and one of the most aggressive predators. He got his name in honor of a white belly (the rest of his body can be gray, black or brown). In length, such a shark grows to 5–6 m, weighs 600–3200 kg. And unlike other fish, she is very freedom-loving.
They first tried to place it in the aquarium in Japan in the middle of the twentieth century. Unfortunately, the predator died without lasting there even a day. Since the 1970s They tried to tame her several times in in Orlando, but everything was unsuccessful: the fish either died, or they simply released it in a timely manner. In 2004, the shark was brought to the aquarium of Monterey Bay, where she was able to live for several months (how, it is not clear). It is also known that they tried to get a predator a couple of years ago in Japan, but she died within 3 days. There were other attempts that ended unsuccessfully, and scientists tried to explain everything.
So, in South Africa, for their jaws they give from $ 20 to $ 50 thousand, and for a tooth – up to $ 800
In their opinion, one of the main problems of aquariums is the diet. Sharks are predators that lead the ocean’s food chain. There they feed on carrion only from hopelessness. Ideally, they should catch up with prey in order to maintain good health.
Another cause of fish death is oxygen. White sharks need to swim forward all the time so that the water that passes through their gills provides them with the right amount. Since adults can grow up to 6 m in length, they need a huge space for maneuvers, but in the oceanarium it is limited.
So, it is known that the predator Nicole crossed the distance from Africa to Australia and back in just 9 months, and this is more than 20 thousand km.
It is also worth noting that the white shark is dangerous to humans. True, individuals die out due to poaching. So, in South Africa, for their jaws they give from $ 20 to $ 50 thousand, and for a tooth – up to $ 800. About $ 1000 is paid for a couple of fins. To prevent the complete extinction of the species since 2002, predators are protected by special units.
